Here are some suggestions of new things to try, or changes you could make, that will help both body and mind in 2025...
Acts of kindness
From simply giving someone a compliment to signing up to help out with a charity, there are a variety of ways you can show acts of kindness in 2025 regardless of the amount of time you have to spare. Being kind to one another not only brings joy to the people you help, but will boost your own mood too. Thanking people and saying well done when it is deserved are simple ways to do this on a daily basis. Donating time or money to a charity – whether a one off or something more regular – is another way to help out in the community. Or simply ask your neighbour if they need any shopping picking up, or fancy a coffee and a chat. It’s also worth reflecting on how much time you have been spending with family and friends – if life has proven extra busy of late ensure to put some time aside to see them, or simply send a message checking in on how they are.
More relaxation time
It's also important to make time for yourself, so why not use the new year as a chance to reasses your work-life balance? In the fast paced world we live in there are many ways we can counter balance this and reduce our stress. Meditiation and activities such as yoga and Pilates will help to relax you and aid better sleep, as well as improving core strength and flexibility and can even help with aches and pains in some cases. The beauty of this practice is that you only need minimal space and no equipment other than a mat if you want to try it at home, while there are also plenty of classes available if you would like to make it a social activity. And remember yoga is for all, altough initially seen as a female dominated activity, more and more men are enjoying the benefits of it, with Sussex having classes specifically for men, through Yoga For Men's Health.
Eat more healthily
Diet is always on our minds as the new year dawns, whether because you have overindulged over the festive period or because a new year offers a good opportunity to start with a clean slate. Taking a look at the meals you have and eating more healthily may prove a better way to ensure you stick to any diet you may want to do as it is about changing your long term habits rather than adopting a plan that is either unrealistic or once ended could see you revert back to old habits. Cooking from scratch ensures you know exactly what ingredients are going into your meals. Preparing a plan for the week will mean that you are not making decisions when you are tired on the day and liable to go for an easy, and often less healthy, option. It is also a great way to budget your weekly shop as well as avoid any wastage.
Go on your travels
If travel is top of your list for 2025 get thinking now as if you have a specific destination or time of year in mind to travel it will affect what your options are. If you plan ahead you can also keep an eye out for great deals as they come up. Booking a holiday now will also bring you some cheer during the winter months giving you something to look forward to – or alternatively you may decide to get the year off to an exciting start and head off straight away! Top places to visit in 2025 according to Lonely Planet include Pondicherry in India, Bansko in Bulgaria, Osaka in Japan, Curitiba in Brazil, Genoa in Italy and Pittsburgh in the USA. So get planning, the world is your oyster!
Declutter your home
Refreshing your environment can help boost your mood through decluttering, as tidying up your home can make you feel calmer and in control – plus it will also make it easier to keep on top of cleaning throughout the year ahead. Having a clear out could also be a great way to make some spare money. Are there clothes, ornaments, furniture you really don’t need? By selling them you are not only freeing up more space in your home but earning money for any improvements you may need to make, or simply to treat yourself. There are lots of websites where you can sell both vintage and modern items, or if you simply want to pay it forward then drop them off at your local charity shop and help others get the new year off to a good start at the same time.

Get fit to boost your positivity
Getting more exercise is another popular resolution each year, and if you are planning to do this it is important to remember that exercise is not just about losing weight or setting goals, it is also a great way to boost your mental wellbeing too. Some people work well with strict targets, such as the number of miles run or lengths swum, but don’t let the pressure of these targets put you off – if you are having a tough day just give an activity a go, if you decide you can’t reach your set target it is not a failure, you’ve made the effort and tomorrow is another day. Kent and Sussex have lots of gyms that can help you reach your fitness goals, and now is a good time to look at joining as they often offer new year deals. From council operated leisure centres to private health clubs there’s lots of choice across our counties. And getting 2025 off to a good start Kingsmead Leisure Centre in Canterbury has just opened its new centre offering gym, swim, classes and more. There are also lots of free outdoor gyms across Kent and Sussex to help you get in shape and get some fresh air at the same time.
Put your finances in order
January is often a tough month for people after the expense of Christmas plus being the time of year we are inevitably spending more on gas and electricity. Now is a good time to look at what your outgoings are and if there is anything that you simply don’t need to be paying out for. For example, are you using any memberships and streaming subscriptions you have enough to warrant their monthly cost? Or why not see if you could get a better deal on your phone bill, broadband or energy supplier? Taking a bit of time to assess just where your money is going might reveal a few new options you hadn’t realised. And as the new year gets going set yourself a budget for what is manageable for the year ahead. It is also a good idea to put a little bit aside every month for those unexpected outlays.
Spend more time outdoors
Getting out in nature has been proven to be good for the body and mind – and living in such a beautiful corner of the country we have no excuse not to get outdoors in Kent & Sussex. A simple walk in your local area will get fresh air into your lungs and a spring in your step, or if you like to cycle there are plenty of places to go, from the Forest Way cycle path and Cuckoo Trail in Sussex to Bedgebury Pinetum and Betteshanger Park in Kent. We also have the benefit of a number of National Trust gardens and English Heritage sites to visit, as well as independent venues such as Hever Castle and Penshurst Place. Not to mention the chance to have a brisk stroll along one of our many promenades, or a country walk on the Ashdown Forest or South Downs.
Get reading
Whether you're a fan of an e-reader or old school and like a paperback book there's no excuse not to get reading in 2025. Good for your brain, it improves your focus, concentration and memory and it also helps to reduce stress, offering an opportunity to relax and immerse yourself in a tale that takes you away to another place. Reading before bed can also help with gaining better sleep, providing a calm environment to induce relaxation. Libraries are really important for our communities and free to join, so making use of them will boost your brainpower as well aiding their survival.
Consider a digital detox
If you feel you are dedicating too much time to scrolling through social media maybe the new year offers the opportunity to reassess your habits and set yourself some rules for the amount of time you are online. You don’t need to cut yourself off entirely (although some people find this may prove beneficial) just decide on the amount of time you think is healthy for you, and try to stick to it. Why not set yourself a time each evening to switch off all technology to give yourself a chance to wind down before going to bed? Taking a bath or reading a book are good ways to get your body to start relaxing and aid the sleep process.
Just remember, whatever goals you set yourself, try to make them something you can incorporate naturally into your lifestyle so that you don’t start to feel like they are a chore – and as well as acts of kindness to others, when it comes to trying to stick to new year resolutions, be kind to yourself too.
