East Sussex Students Achieve Third-Highest A-Level Grades In England
New data has revealed the English counties with the top-performing A-level students, with Rutland taking first place.

Qualified teachers for tuition, Teachers To Your Home, analysed 2024 data from the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation on the percentage of A-level students who received grades of A or above in each county throughout England. The findings determined the counties with the top-performing students.
Rutland has been revealed as having the highest achieving A-level students in England, with 39.7% of results being A grades or above across the county. Some of the subjects in which Rutland A-level students performed better than the rest of the country include Art and Design at 63.2%, compared with 32% nationally, and Biology at 41.2%, compared with 27.1% nationally.
In second place, Surrey witnessed 35.6% grades of A or above across the county. The county was second to Rutland in Biology at 37.7%, outperforming the national total at 24.3%.
Not far behind Surrey is East Sussex in third place, with 34.4% of grades being A and above. Mathematics appears to be the strong suit of East Sussex’s students, as they topped the national rate of 41.5%, with 55.3% of grades in this subject being A or above.
Hertfordshire was awarded fourth place with 33% of grades being A or above. The county came third in the country for Geography results of grade A and above with an average outcome of 31.4%, higher than national total at 24.2%.
In fifth place was Oxfordshire, with 32.8% of grades being A or above. The subjects where Oxfordshire had the highest percentages of A* grades were English Literature at 19.1%, compared to 9.8% on a national level, and Chemistry at 17.8%, compared to 9.5% nationally.
Buckinghamshire ranked sixth on the list, with grades of A or above accounting for 32.4% of all results. One of the county's top-performing subjects was Computer Science, where they tied second with Northumberland for 10% of grades being A* compared with the national average of 5.7%.
Cambridgeshire came in seventh place, with grades of A or above representing 32% of all results. Cambridgeshire students achieved the highest proportion of A grades in English Language at 22.6%, compared with 11.5% nationally.
Warwickshire achieved eighth place with grades of A and above, representing 31.8% of all results. Berkshire and Greater London tied for ninth place with 30.7%, and Hampshire tied for tenth place with Shropshire, achieving 28.8%.

Gillian Dixon, CEO of Teachers to Your Home, commented on the findings: “Recently, we have observed a countrywide increase in all grades marked A* or A. In 2024, England experienced an outcome of 27.6%, which has risen from 26.5% in 2023. It’s interesting to see which counties are contributing the most towards this final number, so we know whom to look to for an example of excellent systems.
“Additionally, we can see which areas may need more assistance. No counties in the North appeared in the top ten, which highlights that these areas may need improvements, such as additional resources or funding. Further to this, having an understanding of the subjects with the highest proportion of these grades sheds some light on the subjects that need more attention and support from education leaders.”
