Celebratory Match Marks 300 years Of Cricket At Penshurst Park
While the Olympics have closed and we reflect on our UK sporting stars’ medal haul, a sleepy corner of Kent has been quietly bowling over locals and battling for 300 years at one of the UK’s oldest surviving cricket clubs.
Between 3rd July and 10th July 2024, Penshurst Park CC hosted a celebratory week to mark its 300-year anniversary of cricket being played on the ancient ground located in the historic parklands at Penshurst Place
A key highlight of the event was a 25 over match that took place on 4th July between a selected President’s XI team (representing Lord De ‘L’Isle, owner of Penshurst Place) captained by Ben Thomas and whose players included heir to Penshurst Place, Dr Hon Phillip Sidney versus a Penshurst Park XI team captained by Dave Smith, who has played for the club for 30 years.
The match was closely fought (scorecard for the game) with Penshurst Park Cricket Club XI opening and posting 233-1 from 25 overs. Following which, the players and supporters enjoyed a traditional homemade cricket tea before returning to the pitch for the President’s XI innings which saw them make 175-9 from 25 overs, with Joe Bradley scoring 96.
At the end of the celebratory game, Dave Smith, captain of the Penshurst Park team presented Dr Hon Phillip Sidney with a 300-year anniversary club cap.

Dr Hon Phillip Sidney said: “I am delighted to be able to congratulate the club on their 300th anniversary, and I am glad that it continues to go from strength to strength. I was hugely honoured to be presented with a commemorative cap and will wear it proudly in next year's match – it might help me to score a run or two!'
