Hastings, in East Sussex, is officially the UK’s ‘Grinchiest’ city, with fewer Christmas-related searches per 100,000 people than anywhere else in the country.

Hastings, in East Sussex, is officially the ‘Grinch’ capital of the UK, new research has revealed. Hastings has the fewest Christmas-related searches in the whole nation – just 1,101 per 100,000 people. In comparison, Bolton – the UK’s most Christmas-obsessed city – had 10,967 Christmas-themed searches per 100,000 people.
The study, by leading SEO platform Ahrefs, analysed 80 of the most popular Christmas-related keywords, including “Christmas”, “How many days until Christmas", "Christmas movies", "Christmas gift ideas”, and "Christmas music", in every UK city with a population above 100,000 people. This allowed them to calculate which cities had the fewest Christmas-related searches per 100,000 residents, discovering the UK’s top ten ‘Grinch’ cities.

Watford is second on the list of ‘Grinchiest’ cities in the UK. In Watford, there were just 1,503 Christmas-themed searches per 100,000 people.
Oxford ranks as the third ‘Grinchiest’ city in the UK, with 1,505 Christmas-related searches per 100,000 people. Woking, Nottingham and Rotherham are fourth, fifth and sixth ‘Grinchiest’ cities in the UK, with 1,616, 1,767 and 1,827 Christmas themed searches per 100,000 people.

Cambridge is the seventh biggest ‘Grinch’ city in the country, with 1,956 Christmas-related searches per 100,000 people. Cardiff is eighth on the list of ‘Grinchiest’ UK cities, with just 2,016 Christmas-themed searches per 100,000 people.
Derby is the ninth ‘Grinchiest’ city in the UK. In Derby, there were just 2,182 Christmas-themed searches per 100,000 people in the city. High Wycome is officially the tenth biggest ‘Grinch’ city in the country, with just 2199 Christmas-related searches per 100,000 people.

At the other end of the scale, Bolton is the most Christmas-obsessed city in the UK. Bolton has 10,967 Christmas-themed searches per 100,000 people – the highest number of Christmas-related searches in the whole nation.
Manchester is the UK’s second most Christmas obsessed city, with 10,634 Christmas searches per 100,000 people. Croydon, Lincoln and Wakefield are also among the most Christmas-obsessed, with 9,192, 8,813 and 8,214 Christmas-related searches per 100,000 people respectively.
Tim Soulo, CMO at Ahrefs, commented on the findings: “It is fascinating to see how interest in the Christmas season varies from city to city in the UK, with some cities showing comparatively little interest in Christmas, and some showing incredible enthusiasm for all things Christmas-related, from trees and decorations, to cosy Christmas pyjamas and gifts.
