Local Law Society Celebrates 90th Anniversary

The Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge & District Law Society (TWTDLS) celebrated its 90th anniversary on Monday 29th May, having been officially founded in the offices of Berry & Berry (now Berry & Lamberts Solicitors) in Church Road, Tunbridge Wells.

The current President of TWTDLS, John Spence, a Property Litigation Partner at CooperBurnett LLP, was invited to mark the occasion at the office where the organisation began its life with Paul Reader, Managing Partner at Berry & Lamberts (and Head of its Commercial and Dispute Resolution Department). They were joined by Joanna Pratt, Deputy Vice President of TWTDLS (and Senior Partner and Head of the Family department at Thomson Snell & Passmore) and Imogen Fleur, President of the Kent Junior Lawyers Division (and a Trainee Solicitor at CooperBurnett LLP).

The TWTDLS was founded in 1933 by local solicitors practicing in Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge. Led by a committee elected annually, it offers support to local solicitors and other legal professionals, including networking, training and social events, while also representing the local members in consultations with The Law Society, Solicitors Regulation Authority and other Government bodies. In addition to solicitors, the membership also includes paralegals, trainees, legal executives, barristers and in-house counsel.

The TWTDLS is sponsored by Newman Business Solutions, TN Recruits Law and Tower Street Finance.

John Spence is in his second year as President of the TWTDLS. He has increased the number of training events the organisation runs, as well as strengthening its relationship with the Law Society of England and Wales. John has met Lubna Shuji, current Law Society President at a number of regional events.

“I am really proud to be leading the TWTDLS in its 90th year,” said John Spence. “Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge are home to some highly respected law firms – some of which, in addition to Berry & Lamberts, have been members since the start, including Cripps, Thomson Snell & Passmore, Warners and Buss Murton.”

He added: “The legal profession in our area has faced many challenges over those years including, only six years after it was created, a World War – but it has continued to thrive and provide support to its members.”

Berry & Lamberts has a history which stretches back more than 270 years and today also has offices in Sevenoaks and Paddock Wood.

“I am very proud to be marking the 90th anniversary of the TWTDLS with John, where it was launched back in 1933,” said Paul Reader. “The organisation has played a vital role in our local legal community over those years and I wish it another successful 90 years.”
