Café No. 35 only use local, family-run and independent suppliers for all of their ingredients, so by supporting them you are also supporting many other like-minded businesses.

All of their dishes are home-made and freshly prepared to order, and the delicious hash browns they have created have become a particular favourite with diners. The menu offers a variety of treats including all day breakfasts, with a vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options available, breakfast specials such as Eggs Benedict and French Toast, bagels, wraps, sandwiches, burgers and salads. The drinks menu provides a selection of teas, coffees and soft drinks, and you can also enjoy a tipple from their selection of alcoholic beverages.

For locals, Café No. 35 offers a great spot to meet up in the week with friends and family for a simple coffee and a chat, take a break from work, or makes a great meeting spot for ladies who lunch. And being open weekends, you can while away your spare time while dining on some delightful dishes.

Café No. 35 was born out of the desire of a group of colleagues and friends – who had met and bonded in previous hospitality businesses – to start up their own independent cafe. During the lockdown of spring 2020 they made the life-changing decision to start up the enterprise – and using their mix of talents and backgrounds they shaped their ideas and built a shared vision.

The strong relationships they forged and their passion for superb food and exceptional customer service, offers something unique to the industry, and unique to Canterbury in particular.

Their teamwork came to the fore right from the start, as the building they had chosen needed to be totally refurbished, which presented the team with many obstacles. However, they were not daunted by the task and redecorated the restaurant themselves where possible, creating a modern, fresh vibe with nods to its past such exposed beams and brickwork. The feature skylight offers a light and bright interior in which to dine, while outside there is a pretty courtyard has been designed and branded to match the café – bringing both indoor and outdoor areas seamlessly together.

Now run by owner Anna Carpenter (pictured below), the café incorporates her two passions of catering and horticulture to create and vibrant café where you can relax surrounded by beautiful plants under the stunning skylight – giving the feel of being in an orangery. This has led to it being known as ‘The Garden Café’.

Anna’s career has seen her work previously both in hospitality and the gardening sectors. As a qualified garden designer working in garden centres she also ran the cafés within the garden centres too, seeing her two skills brought together.

But it was fate it seems that she would find herself owning a café, as her family has a strong background in catering. Her dad started his career as a chef in the navy – going on to become a highly respected chef. This passion carried on into the next generation with her brother becoming a chef too. Meanwhile, her mother also worked in the hospitality sector.

Café No. 35 now encapsulates the combination of her and her family’s backgrounds to create a truly special place to dine.
