Local Primary School Children Enjoy Transition Day At Beacon
Plus Beacon Academy Hosts Sixth Form Induction Day and Enrichment Fair.
Beacon Academy welcomed all Year 6 children that will be joining the school in Year 7 in September for two very positive transition days at the beginning of July.
The children spent two days with their new Year 7 tutor and tutor group, touring the school, taking part in lessons with subject teachers and enjoying fun, team-building activities, including a variety of sports and games on the Academy’s sports fields. On the second day, the children were presented with their Beacon Academy Year 7 tie.
Head of Year 7, Mr Will Sawyer, commented: “The transition days enable our new cohort to meet some teaching and support staff, experience some lessons, become more familiar with our Beeches site and start to make new friends. We hope that our soon-to-be Year 7s enjoyed their time with us this week and we look forward to getting to know them all more from September onwards.”
Year 6 students and their families are encouraged to visit Beacon Academy’s online Year 6 into Year 7 Transition Portal, where they will find a range of resources designed to support students and parents with the transition from primary school to Beacon Academy, including maps, transition booklets, useful videos and FAQs. Beacon Academy Sixth Form Induction Day and Enrichment Fair
All Year 11 students making the transition to Beacon Academy Sixth Form took part in an informative Induction Day at the school’s dedicated Sixth Form Centre on Tuesday 27th June.
The event is designed to allow all Year 11 students progressing from Beacon Academy along with those joining Beacon from other local schools to experience a taste of the courses they have chosen whilst supporting them to consider the choices they have made and think about the combination of options most suited to them as individuals.
Each student received a personalised timetable for the day, attending lessons in each of their chosen subjects and a welcome talk from Head of Sixth Form, Mr Howarth. There was time to meet friends and socialise in the cafeteria and in outside areas at break and lunch time.
As part of an extended break between lessons, students attended a KS5 enrichment fair to discover the range of activities available to them outside of their studies through the Sixth Form enrichment programme. The programme offers the chance to gain transferable skills and a qualification that could help them to stand out from the crowd through the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), plus a range of extra-curricular clubs including Five-a-side Football, Volleyball, Film Club, Debate Club, Watercolour Painting, Crochet Club and Fossil Club, as well as volunteering opportunities with external charities and organisations such as Taylor Made Dreams and Artytime.
Students took part in lessons in a wide range of subjects throughout the day, including subjects they have studied before such as Art and Design, Biology, Sport, Geography, Drama, English Literature, Maths, French and Computer Science and Sixth Form only courses such as Uniformed Services, Politics, Digital Media, Philosophy and Ethics and Criminology. Course leaders gave students an overview of the course requirements and took the students through a range of activities. All students were directed to the transition work on the Year 11-Year 12 transition portal to complete during the holidays in preparation for the start of Sixth Form study in September.
The students enjoyed the independent, grown-up atmosphere of the Sixth Form, describing it as a “good environment” with a “nice atmosphere” and commenting, “It is nice to be treated like an adult".
When asked for feedback about their experience of the day, one student reported: “It’s been helpful. I now know what I want to do and what I don’t want to do.”
