With the summer holidays soon upon us and temperatures set to rise, staying protected from the sun has never been more essential.

Sunburn does not just happen with clear blue skies – you can burn even when it’s cloudy. There is no safe or heathy way to get a tan, according to the NHS sun safety guidelines nhs.uk – Follow their advice to ensure you glow without the burn.
Top tips for staying safe in the sun:
- Spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm.
- Never burn, protect your skin with a high factor sunscreen.
- Cover up with suitable clothing and sunglasses.
- Take extra care with children.
- Use at least Factor 30 sunscreen.
What are the SPF and star rating?
The sun protection factor, or SPF, is a measure of the amount of ultraviolet B radiation (UVB) protection. SPFs are rated on a scale of 2 to 50+ based on the level of protection they offer, with 50+ offer the strongest form of UVB protection. The star rating measures the amount of ultraviolet A radiation (UVA) protection. The higher the rating the better. Use at least 4-star rated UVA protection.
How to apply sunscreen correctly?
Most people do not apply enough sunscreen. The NHS recommend as a guide, adults should aim to apply around 6 to 8 teaspoons of sun protection cream. If you are concerned you are not applying enough, you could use a sunscreen with a higher SPF.
