On Friday, July 28, at 6 p.m., at the Clagett Auditorium - Canterbury Cathedral Lodge, an original and unique event, a lecture livened up by an artistic performance constructed through images and sounds will take place.
Andrea Antonio Verardi, a historian and professor at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, recounts and illustrates the centuries-old roots and modern significance of the term “pilgrimage”. Accompanying him is actress Simonetta Solder, who will read selected passages from authors who have addressed this theme in their works.
Together, we can rediscover this word in the writings of Saint Jerome, Bede the Venerable, Geoffrey Chaucer, William Langland, Margery Kempe, Mary Shelley, Elizabeth Gilbert, and other writers. In the background, there will be a selection of images and musical pieces.

The event inaugurates the “In cammino” project, a program conceived by Livia Pomodoro, President of the Spazio Teatro No’hma in Milan. Over a span of three years, from 2023 to 2025, the project will cover seven countries and fourteen European abbeys, symbolically starting on Friday, July 28, from the ruins of Saint Augustine’s Abbey in Canterbury.
“In cammino” is a journey devoted to art and culture, history, and the current times, and is among the selected events for the Jubilee 2025. It will mainly take place along the path of the Via Francigena, from the English Channel to the Mediterranean Sea.
“In cammino” is an immersion in the art, beauty, and spirituality of timeless places—the abbeys—where performances, concerts, recitals, lectiones magistrales, and extended debates on topics of sustainability and circular economy, in line with the organic world that marks the relationship between abbeys and the surrounding territory, will be organized.
