Exciting Outdoor Activities for Adults In The South East

As spring approaches, the longer days and warmer weather mean we have more opportunity to get outdoors.

If you are looking for activities to take part in that will get the blood pumping and offer the chance to get some exercise, then here are 10 top ideas in Kent, Sussex and London...

Guided Running Tours, Kent

See the sights of the historic city of Canterbury and discover its secrets – or simple enjoy the streets you know well and maybe learn something new – on a guided running tour. This offers the opportunity to be outdoors and get some exercise whilst listening to stories about the area. Canterbury Running Tours have a 5km City Tour and a 10km City Plus which also incorporates some countryside trails. Or choose to organise a Bespoke Tour with them where you could explore trails, hills and coastal paths at a distance of your choosing. For an added extra head off on a City Tour and combine it with a trip to the Foundry Brew Pub afterwards, for a well earned drink.

Paddle Boarding, Sussex

Head to Ardingly Activity Centre in Sussex for the chance to enjoy a water-based outdoor adventure on the reservoir. Stand up paddle boarding has become very popular in this country, and at this watersports centre you can hire a board and either glide around at a relaxed pace or go for it with a race in a beautiful setting that will take you away from the day to day world. Other activities you could take part in are sailing, wind surfing and kayaking. After a great workout there is a café there for you to take a well earned break.

Climb Iconic Landmarks, London

See the sights of London from up high at a variety of venues that offer the opportunity to scale their structures for a unique view of the city. Up at The O2 provides the chance to climb over the world famous roof which will reward your efforts with a 360 degree view over Canary Wharf, Greenwich and the Olympic Park.

Meanwhile at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium you could take on the Tottenham Skywalk Experience which – from 46.8m up – offers breathtaking views of the city’s skyline as well as a bird’s eye view of the pitch below. Why not add on "The Edge" to your experience where you take a faster way back down by ditching the stairs and free-fall abseil back to the pitch!



High Ropes Course, Kent

Hangloose Adventure Bluewater has lots of choice for outdoor activities to be enjoyed in Kent where you will feel on top of the world. The Bluewater Skytrek Experience is a high ropes course from which you can see the South East from up high in a tree top trek where you will encounter heart-pumping obstacles such as tree top nets and high wires, to provide an energetic adventure. There is also a lower level trek for those who want to experience the challenge but prefer not to do it from such a height.

Dry Slope Skiing, Sussex

Hit the slopes for some outdoor fun at Bowles Rocks, in Crowborough, Sussex. With two slopes which have the added benefit of flood lights, there plenty of time to learn to ski or practise your talent at the centre. They have a team of experienced instructors to get your adventure underway, with a packed programme of courses, lessons and open sessions, whether you want to have a go at skiing or snowboarding. It offers a great chance to get some exercise outdoors while trying something a little different.

Cycle Around the City, London

See the sights of London while getting a bit of exercise with the London Bicycle Tour Company. You can either hire a bike and weave you own way around the city or book yourself on one of their guided tours and discover centuries-worth of history and stories as you explore the streets. They offer a variety of tours where you will get to see the classic landmarks as well as beautiful parks and the chance to cycle alongside the river. There are also e-bikes available to hire.

Animal Treks, Kent

Take on a trek with a difference at Alpaca Annie in Romney Marsh, Kent. Walk through the countryside enjoying the great outdoors accompanied by a friendly, gentle and curious alpaca on a 90-minute trek. Learn all about these lovely animals as you walk, and then take the opportunity to hand feed them. Meanwhile at Huckleberry Woods in Faversham you can head off on a micro pig walk around a beautiful Kentish orchard, or opt for a stroll with a harness-trained Teddy Bear sheep. There is also the chance to enjoy a walk with a miniature Mediterranean donkey or an alpaca.

Scavenger Hunt, Sussex

Staged in the Stanmer Park estate in Brighton, Sussex, The Hunt is an escape and evade scavenger hunt getting you outdoors enjoying the stunning scenery of the South Downs. Can you evade capture and complete a series of missions using teamwork and strategy as a team of hunters track you down? This theatrical experience is sure to get you moving about as you become a new recruit for MI:5 searching for hidden intelligence, plotting your route and walking through the grounds and hills. Organised by The Pendragon Project, it is suitable for a broad range of abilities and fitness levels.

Wild Swimming, London

For a bracing experience, dive in and take part in some wild swimming in London. At Hampstead Heath, one of London’s best loved green spaces, the Hampstead Mixed Pond is open from May to October. Suitable for competent swimmers, it is a natural bathing pond that has the added benefit of changing areas and showers as well as lifeguards.

Meanwhile at West Reservoir in Hackney you can go for a dip all year round in the 23-acre lake. There is a watersports centre there so you could always take part in certificated sailing and kayaking courses under the watchful eyes of their expert instructors as well. Plus there is a café too for when you need refreshments.

Assault Course, Kent

Boonies located at Betteshanger Park in Deal, Kent is the county’s only obstacle course offering an energetic challenge that will be an unforgettable experience. This outdoor adventure has 30 different obstacles across the army-style assault course and is “based on tried and tested military training techniques and motivational guidance provided by Her Majesty’s Armed Forces trained instructors”. There are also Fitness Bootcamps to take part in, offering a varied and dynamic training experience to improve your strength, endurance and fitness.
