- Faster bacterial growth: Hot conditions will work to speed up the breakdown of food scraps, grease and other debris stuck in pipes, leading to odorous gases and smells.
- Water trap evaporation: Sinks or drains can dry out quicker in hot weather, removing the water seals that usually work to keep nasty smells at bay.
- Dried on residue: Intense heat can work to bake debris into pipe walls, intensifying strong odours.
Stuart recommends some simple tips for those looking to keep their drains as fresh as possible in the warm weather:
- Run water regularly into sinks and drains that aren’t used often, especially in guest bathrooms or outdoor areas, to keep traps topped up.
- Flush outdoor drains and gullies with a jug of water to maintain the seal.
- Clean drains with natural solutions like a mix of baking soda and vinegar followed by hot (not boiling) water to break down grease and gunk.
- Keep outdoor drains clear of leaves and debris, and consider fitting grates to stop garden waste getting in.
- After use, run cold water for 30 seconds to help flush residues away.

While the heat can cause temporary odours from drains, Stuart points out there are signs which may indicate a more serious underlying drainage problem that could require expert attention:
